Here is the groove and fill breakdown for Virtual Insanity, I’ve written out the groove in it’s swung straight format and a sextuplet half bar fill. Give it a try and let me know how you get on.
This week I’ve chosen Virtual Insanity by Jamiroquai as it’s just such a cool track and makes me wanna dance! I heard it at the gym the other day and I just couldn’t help but bop along!
This track is what some people describe as having a “lazy” or “laid back” feel. But if you want the proper terminology it’s “swung straight”! I know, it’s a contradiction in terms, but that’s the best way to describe it. The hi hat is straight 8ths, but the rest of it has a swung feel to it. I’m not going to go into detail, but there is an exact science to “swung straight” that I’ll explain another day! This track is quite tricky to play with the right feel to it, so if you don’t yet know what “swung straight” is don’t worry. And if you haven’t covered sextuplets yet don’t try the fill I’m giving you tomorrow. You’ll get there all in due time.
Just to give you a little trivia, J.K the singer from Jamiroquai, hires in all the musicians as session players. There is no “band” as such. That way he gets all the royalties and gets rich! Genius!
Here’s the breakdown and tomorrow I’ll give you a groove try.
