This weeks “Track of the week” is Play that Funky Music by Wild Cherry, here I will break it down to identify the sections, the amount of bars that make up the sections, giving you the chance to have a listen knowing where changes should happen. Then come the suggested rhythm/rhythms for the track, and finally the fills. Obviously it’s down to you to get hold of the track, and up to you if you want to follow the guide I’ve given, but it can make a great practice tool for drummers of all levels.
The intro on the guitar does it for me, but obviously this site is about drums, so let’s focus!! Right, well, what about the fill that brings in the drums, like my point last week, simple but effective! In fact, this particular track has pretty much the same groove and fills running all the way through. The track is broken into nice 4 and 8 bar chunks, thus making it pretty easy to play. It’s a great party track, and whenever we used it in my old covers band it used to go down a treat. The track incorporates a few lifts and basic fills on the snare drum, so it’s ideal for a confident beginner to have a crack at learning.
